Car keys are being stolen from houses in the course of burglary offences. Residents often leave car keys on the hall floor near the front door, or on the kitchen worktops where they are visible and easy to steal. So, the wrist loops are being provided free of charge to local residents to remind them to hide their car keys, to keep them safe. Simply fix the loop to your car keys, and when you get home, hide them away. The wrist loops are available, free of charge, from the front enq offices at Coalville, Ashby, Kegworth and Castle Donington Police Stns. |

Police in North West Leicestershire have come up with an innovative and eye catching way of reminding motorists to remove their satellite navigation systems from their vehicles.
Since January 1st 2008 there's been a 62% increase in the theft of Sat Navs across the district of North West Leicestershire - 24 were stolen between January 1 2007 and May 29 2007 compared to 39 for the same period this year. As Sat Navs become more popular, that rise is likely to increase so the police are trying to raise awareness of the risk of leaving it on display and reduce the number of offences.
They've produced 4000 bright yellow Sat Nav Tags which are designed to hang around the machine. On one side the tag says; 'Sat Nav - Don't Leave it in the Car' and on the other side is a soft pad that can be used to wipe away the suction cup mark from the windscreen. The tags have been paid for by the police and the North West Leicestershire Community Safety Partnership.
You can collect your free Sat Nav Tag from the Front Enq Office at Coalville, Ashby Kegworth and Castle Donington Police Stns.

A number of night time burglaries have occurred because householders have left windows and doors open during recent hot weather, and forgotten to close them when they went to bed. This is particularly important regarding ground floor access points, at the rear and side of premises. Don`t invite crime. Plse secure all ground floor access points. |
| 30/7/2008 |
Thefts of Satellite Navigation units from cars are on the increase. If you own one of these units, make sure you remove it completely when you leave your car unattended. Take the unit, and the cradle with you, and wipe away any marks from the windscreen. Most people simply remove the unit from view, and put the items in the glove box or under the car seat. Thieves know this, and if they see the cradle or marks they`ll break into the car to search for the unit, (and anything else worth stealing). |

A local resident returned home about 9pm from a holiday and was unpacking his car, then taking things into the house. He returned to the vehicle a few minutes later and found that his Sat Nav unit, wallet and sunglasses had been stolen from inside the veh. He`d left the car insecure for a only a few minutes, and had items stolen. Need I say anymore? Don`t invite crime, prevent it. |

Metal theft enforcement day
Leicestershire Constabulary has held a day of enforcement around the county as part of an ongoing operation to tackle the theft of metal and cable.
As part of Operation Ebony, officers have been working closely in partnership with the Environment Agency, Trading Standards and the Vehicle and Operator Service Agency (VOSA), to pull together the joint powers and experience of these agencies to combat metal theft.
The theft of metal and electrical cable has a significant impact on local communities and can impact on the local and national travel infrastructure with thefts from the rail network and electrical sub-stations. Leicestershire Constabulary is determined to put a stop to it, but need information relating to suspicious activity involving scrap metal or large quantities of electrical cabling.
Do you know someone who has started stockpiling scrap metal/cables?
Do you know someone who is handling scrap metal / scrap cars?
Have you seen suspicious activity where metal products are being moved / stripped?
The enforcements focussed on scrap metal dealers and those individuals who are suspected of supplying them with stolen items and forms part of a national campaign to combat what is an international problem.
We are using the combined experience and intelligence gathered from all of the agencies involved in the operation, as well as the latest policing technology, to track down and arrest offenders.

Be on your guard against a charming, well dressed Italian male, in his late 40`s or early 50`s, with short, well groomed grey hair, who is approaching local people to sell them (supposedly) Armani leather coats or jkts at bargain prices. He`s been at Morrisons last week, and was at the Aldi store in Coalville on Saturday afternoon. Don`t be fooled. This is a scam. He`s usually seen with a black people carrier car. Any information about the man or the vehicle to Steve Hastings, Community Co-ordinator on 0116 248 3043. |

This message has been passed to us from colleagues in Northamptonshire.
Please be aware that a marked Anglian Water van was stolen in the north of the county yesterday.
The registration of the stolen Anglian Water Vauxhall Vivaro van is FE07 DNF.
Anglian Water clothing and ID belonging to one of the water firm's employees were inside the van and were also taken.
The van, which was stolen with the keys, was driven off by a man in his 20s.
Police are warning people to beware of offenders who commit distraction burglaries by posing as bogus water company officials.
Detective Sergeant Michael Chapman said: "We are concerned that the items stolen in this incident could be used to commit distraction burglaries.
"Distraction burglaries are a despicable crime and one of the most common methods used by offenders to carry out this type of offence is to pose as officials from a water company.
"We do urge people not to open the door to unexpected callers and ask them to remind elderly neighbours and relatives to do the same. Only open the door if you are expecting someone by written appointment or if you know them. If the caller is genuine they won't mind.
"Always call 999 if you suspect someone - it could prevent your neighbour from becoming a victim.
"Anyone with information about this theft should call the Police as soon as possible." Thank you. |

He comes "ready to go" with a bucket of water, and during the course of washing the car started asking questions like: were you out last night; are you out tonight; where do you work etc. This person may be legitimate, but if he`s not it`s a great way to find out where to commit crime. Be on your guard. Don`t invite crime, prevent it. Say "No" to unknown and unexpected doorstep callers. |

During the current hot weather plse ensure that ground floor windows and doors are closed before going to bed, or after the business/office/shop premises are closed. In particular check the side and rear access to premises. You`d be amazed how often doors and windows are left insecure making a tempting target for a criminal. |

Firms offering debt advice have been sending bogus text messages to people's mobile phones, claiming to be from Citizens Advice Bureau.
The text message says: 'Citizens Advice Bureau will talk to 6,600 people today with debt problems. Do you need advice on debt? Reply TALK to receive a call from a friendly advisor'.
These messages have not been sent by Citizens Advice Bureau. If you reply to one of these messages, you won't get through to a Citizens Advice Bureau adviser, but a private company offering to sort out your debts in a number of ways including through:
Invidvidual Voluntary Arrangements (IVA)
Debt management plans
Consolidation loans.
If you're in debt, you should be very careful about trying to sort out your problems in one of these ways and should always get advice from an independent debt adviser first.
You can get free, confidential and independent debt advice from your local Citizens Advice Bureau. To find your local bureau, click on Find your local CAB. |

There were a number of distraction burglaries across the area yesterday, Ibstock, Cadeby, Measham and two in Tamworth. A vehicle that was seen at the job in Cadeby was a Black Lexus motor vehicle registration BK07 FKE, this description would match the offence in Measham and the method of claiming to be from the water board to gain entry would link all jobs together.
Yesterday afternoon a White Mercedes Sprinter Van registration MA04 VTZ was stolen from Main Street , Snarestone after the driver was pulled out of the vehicle. The vehicle is white with orange and blue FEDEX logos.
The description of suspects matches that of suspicious males seen in Barrett's of Feckenham Clothing at Measham yesterday afternoon, Barrett's was then subject of an attempt burglary later in the evening. We are awaiting cctv from Barrett's re suspects in store and attempt burglary. |
